I have always suspected I bonded to the neighbor’s dog
rather than to humans. By the time I could formulate desire, probably at the
age of 2, I was smitten with dogs. The sight of a puppy would propel me
inexplicably toward it. Even today, when I see a puppy I am nearly
uncontrollable… it brings out a mothering instinct which is palpable. The sight of a dog makes me smile. Always. And so, from the time I had a choice in my living companions, I have had dogs. For many years I felt that being responsible to these creatures limited my choice to neutered or spayed dogs – several of whom were rescues. But it was always there … that longing for puppies. And (can I admit this?) I ADORE purebred dogs. I decided the time had come… I wanted to be a mommy. Okay, really, a granny to puppies, but you get the idea. The thought was simmering on the back-burner for many many months when one rainy Saturday spent cuddled on the couch with Mr Tibbs, my Boston terrier, watching the Crufts show, I saw a pied French bulldog, and that was it. I fell head over heels in love. I adore the flat-faced breeds as Tibbs will attest. The little brindle pied led me to research everything I could find about frenchies, and I quickly knew this was my breed. If I was going to breed, I was going to do it right … find a puppy from a great breeder who believes in health testing and follow through with testing and showing. Little did I know I was asking for the world … I only wanted a pied show puppy … oh, and a bitch at that. Fate steered me toward Trudy Bettinger and the most beautiful pied baby I have ever seen. Melody was my dream come true, and so my little kennel, Le Reve, “the dream”, began in 2001 when Melody, 4 lbs of attitude, entered my life. There are so many reasons to love this breed … they are out-going, comical, headstrong, and loving! And those smooshy faces! Well, who could resist? My family of frenchies, Mr Tibbs the Boston, Laci the Aussie, cats, parrots, goats, a horse, chickens and ducks lives in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, and I am reminded – every day – that dreams do come true! Welcome to Le Reve!
